April 6, 2009 Storms Cont.
I just finished checking the garden during a break in the rain. There have been lots of growth, but unfortunately it has all been in the weeds. There are hundreds of little two-leaf weeds growing everywhere. I'll need to spend a few hours pulling them all out while they're still little. I'm not sure when I'll get to that if the forecast is accurate!
The orchard is starting to bloom. The farm seems to be a week or so behind the trees in town. But there ares some full branches on the one tree that are looking good!

ReplyDeletethese apple trees really need to be pruned. Way too many branches, poor scaffolding, poor overall structure, way way too much vertical growth, and no central leader. These trees will have problems with: Fungal pathogens(sooty blotch, flyspeck, apple scab, ect), Calcium nutrition, very low fruit set/very small apples, Fire BLight if in your area, decreased photosynthesis due to shading, large amount of aborted fruits, increased risk of scald (storage type). It also seems that there is too much N in your system, only a soil test would affirm that though.
